The Chapman Creek Hatchery operates year round with a full time hatchery manager, 2 technicians and a group of dedicated volunteers.

 

 

 

Daily Activities

  • Clean hatchery water intake screen
  • Clean all tanks holding fish
  • Fill feed buckets and feed fish
  • Give tours to visitors
  • On-going maintenance of tanks, pipes, buildings, roadway, grounds, and gardens 
  • Assist large & small fishermen at the Catch-A-Trout pond
  • Assist with Gift Shop and hatchery administration
  • Seasonal duties as detailed below

 

August to December

  • Adult salmon arrive in Chapman Creek
  • Collect brood stock and sort by species
  • Fin clip all Coho, Cutthroat Trout, and Steelhead fry 
  • Spawn Pink, Chum, Coho, and Chinook Salmon
  • Care of salmon eggs in the Incubation Building 
  • Permitted sale of excess salmon, roe, and salvage for crabbing
  • Chinook eggs transported to Howe Sound Mill for winter ncubation
  • September - Rivers Day Event
  • Release Cutthroat trout to four local lakes October/November
  • All Daily Activities

December to February

  • Salmon eggs start hatching
  • Care of eggs and fry intensifies
  • Feeding and care of Chinook at Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Mill
  • All Daily Activities

 

 

March to July

  • Ponding of Coho, Chum and Pink salmon fry for feeding
  • Steelhead start arriving in Chapman Creek
  • Collection and spawning of steelhead
  • Release Steelhead smolts to Chapman Creek
  • Release of Coho to Chapman Creek
  • Release of Chinook to Chapman Creek
  • Release Pink and Chum to Sechelt Inlet and Chapman Creek
  • Release of Coho to Sechelt Inlet
  • Release of Coho to Halfmoon Bay
  • Release Pinks to Gibsons Harbor
  • April - Salmon Dinner and Auction
  • June - Father's Day is Family Fishing Day at Trout Lake
  • July - Catch-A-Trout Day 
  • All Daily Activities
